You Just Moved Into a New Home
This is the #1 situation where rekeying is non-negotiable. The previous owners could have given copies to neighbors, real estate agents, house cleaners, contractors, and family members. You have no way of knowing how many copies exist. Rekey all exterior locks the day you move in.
You Lost Your Keys
If your keys are lost — not just temporarily misplaced — you must assume they could be found by someone who knows where you live. If your keys have any identifying information or were on a keychain with something traceable to your address, rekey immediately.
Your Keys Were Stolen
A theft is not ambiguous. If your keys were stolen, especially alongside your wallet, ID, or anything else with your address, rekey or replace your locks before you sleep in that home again.
A Roommate or Partner Moves Out
Even an amicable separation can become complicated. Once someone no longer lives with you, they shouldn't have a key that works. Rekeying protects you from unexpected access, intended or accidental.
You Fire a Housekeeper, Nanny, or Contractor
Anyone who had a key for professional access should lose that access when the job ends — especially if the relationship ended badly. This is one of the most commonly overlooked rekeying situations.
After a Break-In or Attempted Break-In
Even if nothing was stolen, a break-in can compromise or damage your locks. Have a locksmith assess the door hardware and rekey or replace as appropriate. Don't return to a false sense of security with the same locks.
